Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of Africa’s most scenic trekking experiences. Located inside Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers spectacular landscapes, wildlife encounters, and breathtaking summit views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

This 4-day trek is perfect for acclimatization before Kilimanjaro or as a standalone adventure for nature lovers and hikers.

4 Days / 3 Nights Mount Meru Itinerary


Day 1: Arusha – Momella Gate – Miriakamba Hut (2,514m)

Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

Your adventure begins with a transfer from Arusha to Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park. After registration, you will be accompanied by an armed ranger due to wildlife presence.

The trek starts through open grasslands and montane forest where you may spot:

  • Giraffes

  • Buffaloes

  • Zebras

  • Colobus monkeys

  • Various bird species

You will ascend gradually to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut – Saddle Hut (3,570m)

Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours

After breakfast, continue trekking through lush forest into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation becomes more dramatic with giant heather and volcanic rock formations.

Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, you will have lunch and rest. In the afternoon, an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) is highly recommended.

Day 3: Summit Day – Socialist Peak (4,566m) – Miriakamba Hut

Distance: 19 km total
Hiking Time: 10–12 hours

Summit attempt begins around midnight. The climb is steep and challenging as you hike along a narrow crater ridge under the stars.

You will reach:

  • Rhino Point (3,800m)

  • Cobra Point (4,350m)

At sunrise, you arrive at Socialist Peak (4,566m). From the summit, enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the vast plains of northern Tanzania.

After photos and celebration, descend back to Saddle Hut for rest and continue down to Miriakamba Hut for overnight.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut – Momella Gate – Return to Arusha

Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

After breakfast, descend through the forest to Momella Gate. Wildlife sightings are common during the descent.

You will receive your trekking certificates before transfer back to Arusha.
