Rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet), Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and one of Africa’s most spectacular trekking destinations. Located within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru offers a unique combination of wildlife encounters, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and breathtaking summit views.
Often overshadowed by its famous neighbor Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is considered a hidden gem — less crowded, incredibly scenic, and highly rewarding for adventurous travelers.
Location & Geography
Mount Meru is situated in northern Tanzania, approximately 70 kilometers west of Kilimanjaro and just a short drive from Arusha town. The mountain is an active stratovolcano with a large horseshoe-shaped crater formed by a massive eruption thousands of years ago.
The mountain features:
A dramatic crater rim
Steep cliffs and ridges
A central ash cone
Diverse vegetation zones from forest to alpine desert
Unique Wildlife Experience
One of the most extraordinary aspects of climbing Mount Meru is that the trek begins inside Arusha National Park. Unlike most mountain climbs in Africa, trekkers may encounter wildlife such as:
Giraffes
Buffaloes
Zebras

For safety, an armed ranger accompanies all trekking groups during the lower slopes.
